Inuit are eligible for an N#, which is a non-insured health benefit
for medically necessary health-related goods and services. These benefits
include drugs, medical transportation, dental care, vision care, medical
supplies and equipment, and crisis intervention mental health counselling.
Some Inuit are not aware that you need a N# and may try to use their
NTI card or other land claims card for health care, but it is the N#
that you need to use. There is a large list of prescription drugs and
over-the-counter medicines that are covered by your N#. When getting
prescriptions for drugs, tell your doctor that you are a non-insured
health benefits patient and would like to make sure the drug prescribed
is covered under the non-insured health benefits-Health Canada.
Tungasuvvingat Inuit counselors have a booklet available for information regarding your N# benefits. The booklet explains who are eligible, benefits provided and other information you should know. Information is also available on the Non-Insured Health Benefits web-site this includes a full list of drugs covered.
To apply for a N# you will have to contact the Non-Insured Health Benefit office closest to where you live.
